FontanaFest is an annual day-long festival aimed at highlighting the family-oriented activities that can be done on or near Pittsburgh’s three rivers. The event was created by PA State Senator Wayne D. Fontana and is conducted each year with the assistance of staff and volunteers and supported by numerous organizations.
Traditionally held on a Saturday at the end of September, FontanaFest has been conducted at the South Side Riverfront Park, along the Monongahela River. Attendees at the event are given free food and drink in addition to being able to participate in activities throughout the day on the river and riverbanks to highlight the activities that are available on Pittsburgh’s rivers.
The event is funded through sponsorships by both local and regional companies that are provided with recognition in return for their contribution. Food, beverages, and related supplies are donated by various businesses throughout the area. Additionally, organizations that participate in the activities are asked to donate their time and resources for the event and/or pay a nominal fee for participation.
FontanaFest is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any future federal tax code. More specifically, it is intended to support an annual community event that highlights Pittsburgh’s rivers and the activities that can be done on and near its waters. Its exemption was effective June 26, 2007.
The organization is also a Nonprofit Cooperative Corporation under Pennsylvania State Law and is considered to be an Institution of Purely Public Charity. It has been granted a Sales Tax Exemption by the Department of Revenue.
